Fire!

I look down on the street below and the Hasidic kids have started another trashcan fire. This one is big! The strangest thing about these fires is that no one bothers to try and put them out. The locals stroll by as if not to notice the flaming urban bonfire. “Is not My word like as fire, saith the Lord” [Torah, Jer 23:29]. Here, we are in the middle of urban NYC; Williamsburg, Brooklyn and the word of God is aflame in the street. The Hasidic believe the Torah – the word of God in written form – is the bridge between heaven and Earth. So, fire is the bridge between Heaven and Earth. Maybe these kids can see heaven when they start fires – that’s probably why it happens so often; who doesn’t want to see heaven without having to die?”
